At 7 AM Frankfurt Time (11 PM CST) they served a minimal
breakfast. We were at the gate about 8 AM local time (midnight CST) and at the
hotel by 9. Miles stayed up, but the rest of us took a nap and got up in
mid-afternoon. Miles briefed us on arrivals and developments that occurred while
we were sleeping. Now we were all set except for one more arrival. Carol was due
in at 2:40. I had arranged for taxis to pick us up at 4:30 to take us to the
main downtown area. The whole crew gathered in the lobby at 4 for introductions
and to wait for Carol. Before long the desk clerk said there was a phone call
for me. This can’t be good news!
Carol was at the airport and had been on the shuttle bus,
but there were policemen everywhere and police tape blocking traffic. They were
told to exit the bus and await developments. As we were talking on the phone, she
observed that it looked like traffic was starting to move. A policeman told her
that there had been the “possibility of a bomb” and that had tied everything
up. He recommended that she take a taxi instead of the shuttle. Meanwhile, two
of our three taxis had arrived at the hotel and left with eight of our group.
Two airport shuttles pulled up – both empty. As a third taxi approached, it
looked like we would be leaving without her. But wait! There was a lady waving
frantically from the back of the taxi! It was Carol. We ran her bag up to her
room and returned to the hotel desk just as our real third taxi arrived.
The rest of our day was pretty uneventful. We toured around
the main tourist area for a while then all gathered for a group dinner at 6:30.
We were back at the hotel soon after 8. Here we are at our dinner: Carol, Bonnie, and Glenn,
Pat, George, and Loretta,
Erv, Miles, and Ray,
and Elizabeth, Kathleen, and Mary Ann.
